Design Strategy
In 2018 Fizik initiated a major overhaul of their existing saddles while also adding a new line of short-nosed saddles, the Argo range. The product development process was new by taking a more scientific approach with e.g. extensive use of pressure mapping.
The challenge for Torgny was to create a cohesive form language that could be applied to saddles spread across such a wide range of user cases while making them look like a family of products. A major constraint is the inability to alter the functional surfaces, since the ergonomics always has top priority. Additionally, it was also a goal to make these new saddles look like the ‘belonged’ visually on modern bikes, which in general had gone in a more technical direction away from round tube shapes of the past. One of the new signature Fizik design features introduced on the new saddles are the dynamic edges that fade out towards the central area. In total Torgny has worked on 10 saddle models with the Fizik development team, the latest ones being new versions of the classic and highly popular Antares and Aliante models.

Torgny’s comment: «Working with the multidisciplinary Fizik team is such a cool and collaborative effort, and you’re so hands-on with the product. There’s countless iterations and direct feedback loops from manufacturing engineers, professional athletes, product managers, bike dealers, medical professionals and material experts. It really is product design in the greatest sense!
